Abstract
This IDC TechBrief is designed to help inform K-12 and higher education leaders about what the metaverse is and to understand the risks, benefits, and strategic considerations as they prepare to make investments for the future. The "metaverse" has become one of the biggest buzzwords in the tech world, and the education industry is no exception. There is significant interest among education leaders in how they can leverage the emerging capability to transform teaching, learning, and operations. However, building the business case at a time when the metaverse is still under construction and education institutions are already undergoing significant change is a challenge for IT leaders.
"The metaverse is still under construction, but it is coming," said Matthew Leger, research manager for IDC's Worldwide Education Digital Strategies program. "The technology not only has many tremendous benefits but also comes with notable risks. Educators have much to do to prepare for what's ahead."
