Abstract

This IDC Perspective discusses the trends in Internet of Things (IoT) AI processors by leading microcontroller unit (MCU) and processor companies. This study provides guidance for technology buyers to better understand the trends in IoT processors to support AI implementation.

"AI exists beyond the datacenter, and companies are working to enable AI/ML for embedded systems down to the systems running on MCUs. Some companies currently only have software implementations, but most embedded processor companies are choosing to integrate an AI compute core on-chip to support the anticipated demand for AI/ML features," says Nina Turner, research director, IDC Enabling Technologies and Semiconductor team. "System designers should clearly specify the system constraints and desired AI functionality as they select the semiconductor vendor to work with."
