Abstract

This IDC Market Glance explores the current makeup of the future of work technology landscape for the future of work "augmentation" pillar, illustrates who some of the players are, and depicts the segments and structure of the market.

The augmentation pillar of IDC's future of work framework spans a spectrum from primarily human-driven work to fully automated work. Augmentation encompasses a broad range of technologies, from robotic process automation (RPA) to workflow and task automation to robotics on a shop floor to augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR). While many have cited concerns about how augmentation of work — including new technologies such as the metaverse and ChatGPT — will inevitably replace humans doing the work, research suggests that it is far more likely that workers across all levels will instead be better able to focus on higher-value tasks. They will also have an opportunity to be retrained, upskilled, or cross-skilled to evolve their career pathways.
