Abstract

This IDC study provides historical data (2017–2021) and forecast data (2022–2026) for the worldwide and U.S. external enterprise storage systems markets. The forecast represents an annual view of the quarterly forecasts released in December 2022 in IDC's 3Q22 Worldwide Quarterly Enterprise Storage Systems Tracker. The forecast and historical data focus on end-user consumption of three categories of enterprise storage systems — external OEM, internal OEM, and "other," which covers cumulative shipments of systems sold directly to customers by ODMs. For each of these categories, IDC has estimated value (end-user spending), terabytes, and price per gigabyte.

"In the past two years, we have seen strong growth in the enterprise storage systems market driven by expanding digitization of business strategies and solutions, modernization of infrastructure, overall increase in volumes of generated and stored data, and growing needs of data analytics," says Natalya Yezhkova, research VP, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms, and Technologies. "However, as part of the overall IT ecosystem, the enterprise storage systems market is now at the epicenter of what IDC calls a storm of disruption — a combination of factors such as risk of recession, inflation, geopolitical instability, and shortage of labor, which all together create an environment in which organizations are more cautious with their planned infrastructure investments and consider a broader spectrum of solutions that can serve their growing storage needs."
