Abstract

This IDC Survey primarily summarizes findings from IDC's 3Q22 survey of U.S. gamers as it relates to PC/Mac and home console gamer accessory and peripheral purchases. Demographics of PC and console accessory/peripheral buyers are examined through 3Q22.

Buyer demand is assessed in eight input product categories among PC/Mac gamers: gaming mice, standard mice, gaming keyboards, standard keyboards, gamepad controllers, joysticks, webcams, and racing wheels. Demand is assessed in eight audio product categories: headphones, wired stereo/surround headsets, surround sound speakers, wireless stereo/surround headsets, mono chat headsets, mono/stereo speakers, standalone microphones, and True Wireless earbuds or headsets. The survey additionally examines annualized PC/Mac monitor, GPU, CPU, and memory upgrade buying rates, as well as additional storage and gaming chair purchasing rates.

From a home console vantage point, the eight input categories assessed are console-branded gamepad controllers, third-party gamepad controllers, mice, keyboards, music game controllers, racing wheels, webcams, and PS VR headsets. On the audio side of the market, annual buying rates of the following eight product types are assessed: over-ear headphones, wired mono headsets (voice chat only), third-party wired stereo/surround headsets, stereo/surround speakers, sound bars, console-branded wired stereo/surround headsets, third-party wireless stereo/surround headsets, and console-branded wireless stereo/surround headsets. The survey also compares the top 6 most purchased accessories in the preceding year among Xbox Series X/S, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and PS4 gamers.

This survey includes a sizing of worldwide retail spending in six PC gaming/gaming-related accessory categories, including gaming monitors, and in two home console accessory product categories from 2019 to 2024.

"2022 was a rough year for gaming accessories and peripherals, with PC-based spending plunging 16% and home console–based spending falling 9% globally. By 2024, though, we expect both market segments will have recovered. In fact, we anticipate both segments will nearly get back to the heightened level of retail revenue generated in the initial pandemic year of 2020." — Lewis Ward, IDC's research director of Gaming, Esports, and VR/AR
