Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight examines a recent IDC survey on data management that showed that 40% of those surveyed have moved at least some of their database workloads from the public cloud back to the datacenter. This IDC Survey Spotlight examines this move, and its reasons, and offers some interpretation of this result. "Many organizations have moved their databases to the public cloud precipitously, using the 'lift and shift' technique, deploying in virtual machines, without paying sufficient attention to required database tuning changes," says Carl Olofson, research vice president for Database Management Software research at IDC. "This could account for both the performance and cost issues."
