This IDC Tech Buyer Presentation covers research showing the degree of sharing today, and more than half a dozen examples of ecosystems sharing data and/or insights using data sharing and marketplaces technologies. Shared data and insights, in the context of an industry ecosystem, can provide many benefits including better decision making, better cross-enterprise collaboration and reduced costs. This all sounds good in practice — but how has any group made this a reality? "Many enterprises are sharing data in informal or one-off ways, but it takes planning along with data sharing or marketplace technologies to make the vision of shared data and insight a reality," says Lynne Schneider, research director, Data-as-a-Service and Data Marketplaces at IDC.
