Abstract
This IDC study provides BYOD decision imperatives organizations must work through in four key areas: understanding worker populations, creating BYOD policies, evaluating technology, and evaluating services solutions. In addition, we provide guidance on which key stakeholders in the organization should be involved in BYOD policy creation, education, and enforcement. Finally, we provide actionable advice on how an organization can maximize the potential for a successful BYOD program. Overall, IDC believes companies can and should leverage BYOD to their advantage when appropriate. By enabling a greater population of employees to be productive anytime and anywhere, the organization can be more agile in responding to both internal and external needs. However, expanding mobile access to a broader set of users on non-IT-owned assets also requires an organization to create a set of policies to govern the use of these devices in the corporate environment. Failure to do so can seriously impact the risk and compliance posture of the organization.
"In the enterprise, BYOD programs are here to stay whether IT admins like it or not," says Bryan Bassett, research manager, Enterprise Mobility at IDC. "While BYOD poses significant challenges regarding both corporate security and end-user privacy, thoughtfully executed and managed BYOD programs have incredible potential to reduce IT spending, increase employee productivity and capability, and provide greater numbers of workers with increased flexibility in how they work."
