Abstract
This IDC TechBrief discusses the use of digital twins in cities and communities. Urban areas and large cities are struggling to keep up with the needs and service delivery to rapidly growing populations. However, it's clear that today's cities weren't designed to sustain such explosive levels of growth with the prevalence of urban issues such as high energy consumption, pollution, traffic congestion, and inequality.
"To build the resilience that cities require to withstand the demands of tomorrow's urban population, governments will need to find smarter ways to design and manage urban environment while also addressing sustainability issues. Digital twins could be just what urban planners need," said Ruthbea Yesner, vice president, IDC Government Insights, Education, Smart Cities, and Communities. Digital twins represent a technology with the potential to achieve positive, transformative urban change through urban planning, landscape and building architecture, and creating and testing the design of the human-centric environment. Cities can holistically address issues at both the neighborhood level and the citywide level, but this necessitates the adoption of new, complex technologies and systemic approach. Further, as artificial intelligence takes hold and IoT capabilities are increasingly deployed in cities, having a single version of the truth, and the ability to place it in front of people, will be the only way to truly take advantage of the full range of Smart City investments.
