Abstract
This IDC Perspective examines the range of database usages, and their corresponding database models, providing detailed examination of both, together with example vendors and products. It offers insight into the process of selecting DBMSs based on purpose, deployment, and operational combinations and provides guidance meant to engage all relevant stakeholders in the process.
"There is such a wide variety of database management systems available, based on a range of data management technologies, it is difficult to choose the right one for a given project and, even more challenging, to choose one that may anchor a range of different applications," says Carl Olofson, research vice president for Data Management Software research at IDC. "Careful consideration at the earliest stages can result in savings of money and time and can avoid frustration. There is no one-size-fits-all solution here."
