Abstract
This IDC MaturityScape provides organizations the framework to assess their current approaches to connectivity and the maturity of their strategy for incorporating 5G as both a tactical and strategic element for long-term growth, operational resiliency, and as a core component of their long-term road map toward optimized connectedness. The document is intended to provide actionable insights that senior company leadership, along with IT and line-of-business executives, can leverage to successfully integrate 5G into day-to-day business activities and facilitate innovative customer engagement opportunities.
Organizations will be classified across an array of attitudes and approaches to 5G ranging from:
- Active indifference
- Viewing 5G as "nice to have" and a token reputational asset
- Utilizing 5G as a tactical tool for delivering siloed business impacts
- Embracing 5G for use within the organization without adapting the organization to 5G
- Positioning 5G as an integral component of a wireless-first mindset and overall business strategy
"Effectively integrating 5G into an organization's digital transformation agenda requires connectivity to be viewed through the lens of a strategic imperative and recognized as a mission-critical enabler of seamless, secure, and reliable information flow across the organization's people, processes, applications, and things," says Jason Leigh, research manager for IDC's 5G Monetization and Adoption Strategies program. "To deliver meaningful and recurring value to the organization, 5G cannot be relegated to a tactical element in the IT toolbox supporting a singular use case. Companies that will see material improvement in efficiency and financial KPIs from 5G recognize that 5G adoption is not plug-and-play, rather it is a journey — one best started sooner than later — beginning with establishing base connectivity and evolving through new use cases with 5G interdependent with the maturation of other digital technologies."
