Abstract

This IDC TechBrief describes the factors involved in adopting or migrating to a cloud-native DBMS — including the various technology choices and their associated use cases, benefits, risks, and other effects of such a move — and how to plan or prepare for cloud-native DBMS adoption.

"Adopting or moving to a cloud-native DBMS is not a decision to be taken lightly because it involves very different methods of data management as well as database and application development," says Carl Olofson, research vice president for Data Management Software research at IDC. "Adoption of a cloud-native DBMS for new applications is less problematic since there is no legacy to worry about particularly with respect to connected and dependent applications, and IDC has noted that the rate of adoption of cloud-native DBMSs is greater for analytic applications, since they tend to receive far more data than they send."
