Abstract

This IDC Perspective is designed to help CIOs and their teams leverage IDC MaturityScape: Future IT 1.0 (IDC #US47174621, March 2021) to create the unique strategies and road maps that help their organizations ascend the ladder of digital competencies and capabilities needed to thrive in the era of digital business. It enables CIOs and LOB executives to assess the competency and maturity of IT in relation to its ability to support a digital enterprise. The document enables IT leaders to prioritize as they manage complex change.

"Future IT" sounds like a distant, aspirational destination in time but in fact is an immediate and critical pursuit for CIOs. It is a journey with no end that builds on steps and actions taken today that continually elevate the digital competencies of enterprises. Yet to be successful, CIOs and LOB executives need a vision for their future IT, a clear-eyed assessment of where IT stands today, and prioritized strategies to realize the vision.

"CIOs need to avoid the temptation to merely cherry pick from the subdimension stages but should instead use the IDC MaturityScape: Future IT 1.0 (IDC #US47174621, March 2021) to spark their own creative thinking and innovation," says Marc Strohlein, adjunct research advisor with IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP). "Viewed as an artist's palette, the power comes not from using the basic colors but from the infinite combination of new shades that can be obtained by blending colors to create new ones."
