Abstract
This IDC Perspective examines the importance of cybersecurity ethics, the CIO's role in ensuring that ethical decisions are made, and a framework for ethical cybersecurity decisions. Both CIOs and cybersecurity professionals must understand and adopt a consistent ethical framework when reacting to cybersecurity incidents. An ethical framework develops, builds, and protects the corporate trust that organizations seek to defend in their interactions with stakeholders.
"Organizations lacking an ethical framework will find that inconsistent action that is difficult to justify and defend in the public sphere will erode and diminish trust that their organization has built," says Ron Babin, adjunct analyst with IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP). "This document's ethical decision framework is designed to help CIOs create trust frameworks that drive trustworthiness within the ecosystem."
