Abstract

This IDC study is the last of three IDC PlanScape documents that provide recommendations for CIOs as they enhance their organization's measurement maturity. In this study, the key performance indicators (KPIs) that the CIO shares should evolve as the enterprise progresses in its transformation into a digitally driven enterprise. The first two documents advised CIOs on actions to take to demonstrate that IT is being run efficiently and effectively and that enterprise performance is communicated in the language of business; both are key to demonstrating IT's contribution to building and sustaining competitive advantage.

This IDC study discusses the steps to be taken to measure the successful progress of digital transformation. An established enterprise doesn't become a digital enterprise overnight. Often termed a journey and not a destination, transformation comes with many discrete steps: widely ranging in complexity from relatively simple decisions and process changes to extensive re-architectures. Existing technologies can be used in new ways and new technologies will be injected. Some steps toward digital may be small and fast, some more drastic. Each change should bring about improvements that can be measured — whether the impact is seen in response time, overhead expense improvement, improved profitability, and so on. Demonstrating to the business the impact of these changes will inspire and increase enterprise confidence in the digital directions that the CIO sets.

"The CIO is in the unique position to influence the digital direction of their enterprise. Their effective support of internal IT processes and technology and their understanding and improvement of the measures of business success position CIOs for a credible role leading their enterprise digital transformation," reports Cora Carmody, adjunct researcher within IDC's IT Executive Advisory Group. "Showing measured progress on the journey enhances the trust that the organization has in the CIO's leadership."
