Abstract
This IDC Perspective provides a foundation for CIOs in enabling the resilient organization toward the future of operations and responsive decision making. This document is a guide to the future of operations, which is designed to help CIOs understand the strategic opportunities to leverage market-driven disruption toward a more strategic digital transformation road map. The drive to digital engagement wrought by the pandemic creates a window of opportunity for CIOs to reimagine their role and contributions toward the responsive and data-driven operations foundations of the future.
"The future of operations will clearly drive a need to move past traditional operational economies of scale and efficiency toward iterative reengineering that adapts quickly to the many complex demands of the new normal," says Alizabeth Calder, adjunct research advisor with IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP). "Our challenge as CIOs will be to reimagine technology and data foundations in parallel with operations work that will drive fundamental changes in physical plant, operational process, and organizational behaviors. We need to quickly instantiate responsive data, learn, and respond faster to market shifts and infuse digital transformation in all aspects of our strategy including supply chain and partnerships. It is critical to have a framework to embark on that journey, so we can keep the momentum that the COVID-19 response created and sustain both energy and the impetus for change throughout the operations organization."
