Abstract
This IDC Perspective discusses current views about mainframe inclusion as part of DevOps and the consequences of a lack of visibility and coordination between legacy systems and "modern" development including systems of engagement. There is an increasing demand for DevOps strategies that include systems of record (SoRs) and incorporate successful approaches to include back-end, legacy systems and applications on the mainframe as part of digital transformation and DevOps. This is exponentially the case during a time of global pandemic where enterprises — from healthcare to state and local governments — experience crucial demand for SoR access. The velocity of change resulting from the need for "multimodal" or cross-platform software deployments is pivotal in dramatically speeding a proactive, SoR-inclusive DevOps strategy. These strategies rely on a transition to agile approaches and decisions about how to effectively leverage existing systems. Establishing strong practices and organizational approaches complemented by automated strategies to establish integration via RESTful APIs (as compared with rehosting) along with organizational and process change is increasingly becoming key.
"The intent of this document is to help enable companies to shift from the downsides and challenges of unengaged approaches to SoR as part of DevOps and provide context and insight via implementation approaches for broader, encompassing agile strategies," said Melinda Ballou, research director for IDC's Agile ALM, Quality, and Portfolio Strategies service. "This is all the more vital during a global pandemic, where incorporation of SoR and related data as part of DevOps strategies can be life critical."
