Abstract

This IDC TechBrief looks at the graph database software market. It includes the uses and benefits of graph databases, considers risks, and recommends approaches to adoption.

"The various kinds of graphs serve different purposes. Property graphs can be used to discover anomalous behaviors, such as suspicious data access, credit card fraud, identity theft, and computer malware, which can be difficult to detect because the patterns are so subtle," says Carl Olofson, research vice president, Data Management Software at IDC. "Graphs used for semantic analysis are sometimes called 'semantic graphs' or 'knowledge graphs.' They are commonly used to ingest and represent human language content in ways that allow analysts to find relevant documents or portions of documents and to determine which documents have meaning-based relationships with other documents. In this way, graph databases are key tools for use in knowledge management."
