Abstract

This IDC Perspective discusses DataOps logistical infrastructure.

Most organizations use data far less effectively than they would like. The key reason is data silos that prevent efficient data leverage to deliver the information that business leaders need to make faster, more informed decisions. Data logistics goes beyond infrastructure management to enable data leverage, often through DataOps. Using the analogy of the human circulatory system that efficiently delivers oxygen to cells, data logistics is intended to deliver data efficiently throughout the organization that it serves where it can be used to its fullest value.

"Data logistics is not just another term for infrastructure management," said Phil Goodwin, research vice president, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms and Technologies Group at IDC. "It extends infrastructure management with a view of how data is captured, stored, moved, protected, and ultimately utilized with the organization. Data logistics is the foundation to DataOps, the practice of leveraging data for competitive advantage in the marketplace."
