Hyperconverged Infrastructure Use Will Continue to Grow in Edge Environments
This IDC Perspective discusses how hyperconverged infrastructure systems that consolidate virtualization, compute, storage, and networking technologies into a single system, under common management, can offer significant advantages to enterprises facing IT staffing challenges in edge environments. They help simplify provisioning, operations, and management and run on cost-effective, industry-standard hardware to keep down costs. Many vendors are adding edge-focused HCI SKUs and features to address a wide range of use cases, from ROBO applications for which low-footprint appliances would suffice to analytics and AI/ML workloads that require high-capacity, high-performance configurations. Enterprises should do a careful assessment of their current edge workloads and anticipated future requirements to figure out which of the plethora of HCI appliance and software-based options will best meet their needs.
"The combination of classic ROBO use cases and growing analytics, artificial intelligence, and Internet of Things workloads will drive greater use of hyperconverged infrastructure in edge environments," said Carol Sliwa, research director, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms, and Technologies at IDC. "Enterprises will find a wide range of options to address their needs now that vendors are increasingly tailoring their HCI appliances and software for edge environments."
