Abstract
This IDC PlanScape focuses on the evolving utility of video data and provides valuable advice on considerations for enterprises exploring the potential for video surveillance in a business improvement context. The video surveillance market is being driven by the application of video analytics. These analytics enable video surveillance data to be converted from unstructured, analog data into structured telemetry that can be applied to many different business improvement and intelligence functions. Enterprises that integrate video data into their business monitoring and management should investigate video surveillance analytics as a way to accomplish that objective.
According to Mike Jude, research director for Video Surveillance and Vision Applications at IDC, "Video surveillance is not just about safety and security now. Enterprises should explore the application of video data to improving their business processes." However, as Jude notes, "Video data must be converted from raw video streams to structured data to be useful. This requires video surveillance analytics, and enterprises should investigate how such analytics can be applied to leverage their video capabilities to support the business."
