Abstract

This IDC Perspective mainly studies application platform as a service (aPaaS) dominated by Chinese enterprise resource planning (ERP) application vendors. It provides technology vendors with market views on aPaaS from the dimensions of market dynamics ─ the main appeals of today's enterprises ─ and the value of aPaaS. With the rapid development of the digital economy, the needs of enterprises are also changing, especially in the digital transformation (DX) process, and IT system construction is no longer based on single-point applications as it used to be, but rather, it is hoped to be based on the overall platformization concept. Emerging technologies such as low-code development, development operations (DevOps), and microservices have also accelerated the rapid development of aPaaS and enterprise innovation. Therefore, public cloud vendors are also accelerating investment in and the promotion of platforms.

Grace Xu, senior research manager at Enterprise Research Department IDC China, believes that "Due to its long delivery cycle, excessive repeatability, and information silo architecture, the traditional development model leads to high technology investment and cost, and poor flexibility, finding it difficult to support enterprises' business innovation and response to rapid market changes. The rapid development of cloud computing and visualization technology, and the gradual clarification of the concept of low-code/no-code development have enabled enterprises' new attempts on application development. The construction of integrated aPaaS can help enterprises avoid the construction of modular and segmented applications and data silos, unite data, and manage APIs to improve flexibility and efficiency, and facilitates enterprises in completing business innovation and DX."
