Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight examines the key benefits that utilities are seeking when investing in sustainability initiatives. The data is taken from the IDC Future Enterprise Resilience and Spending Survey, November 2022, and highlights some of the drivers for utilities to undertake sustainability initiatives, the challenges they face, and the technologies they can use to overcome them.

"Utility companies are under pressure to reduce their carbon emissions and are focusing on sustainability initiatives that can improve their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance. This drive for greater sustainability comes from tightening government regulations on emissions and by consumers and shareholders who are demanding greater investments and accountability in ESG initiatives. However, by investing in a sustainable business strategy, utilities can benefit financially and achieve better compliance with emissions targets, avoiding unnecessary penalties and fees. Utilities will have to develop a digital road map, adopt new technologies, and develop partnerships to achieve these goals," says Rakesh Patni, associate research director, IDC Energy Insights and Future of Operations, Asia/Pacific.
