Abstract

In this IDC Perspective, multi-access edge computing (MEC) is a crucial use case of 5G technology, which has the potential to transform the way we process and analyze data. By utilizing the high-speed, low-latency, and reliable capabilities of 5G, MEC deployments can achieve operational efficiency, enhance reliability, and improve user experience (UX). Consequently, MEC is a vital area of interest for telecommunication carriers and other industry players that aim to maximize the full potential of 5G technology. This document discusses the importance of MEC as a 5G use case and highlights how 5G can accelerate edge computing to achieve operational efficiency and enhance reliability. It also presents examples of industrial use cases that leverage 5G MEC technology.

"5G can accelerate MEC deployment and help achieve operational efficiency while increasing reliability. The 5G capabilities (higher bandwidth, ultra-low latency, and greater reliability) are essential for enabling MEC because they allow for the fast and reliable transmission of data between devices and edge computing resources," says Khairil Anwar Rahmat, senior research manager, IDC Asia/Pacific.
