Abstract

Augmented/virtual/extended reality (AR/VR/XR) commercial uses are continuing to grow in number, and deployments already exist across all industries, including defense. Many AR/VR/XR tools start off as scientific endeavors in academia, but over time, as the research community widens around specific tools, commercial deployments began to emerge. Most of the commercial use cases in AR/VR/XR are built around existing VR gaming and collaborative platforms, specific computer-assisted and engineering/science software commercial, and open source libraries. "Commercial AR/VR will be primarily tethered for the time being but will continue to develop at a quick pace as more and more verticals develop tools and platforms to solve a wide range of engineering, social, and scientific challenges," says Bill Rojas, adjunct director, IDC Asia/Pacific. He further adds, "Mass market AR glasses are no more than three to five years away as the engineering challenges are well understood and the industry aims to capitalize on sub-7nm semiconductor lithography."
