Abstract

This IDC Market Glance looks at security tokenization technology providers.

Security tokens are equities and debt instruments, such as bonds, that are issued using blockchains and smart contracts.

Not to be confused with initial coin offerings (deservedly maligned a few years ago as "get rich quick" and "pump and dump" cryptocurrency schemes), security token offerings (STOs) are generally issued by legitimate firms seeking to raise capital through private equity and private debt offerings.

STOs can often offer many features, which historically required multiple systems to manage but can now be combined and recorded directly within the STO itself on a blockchain:

  • Data rooms
  • Cap tables
  • Interest and amortization tables
  • Ownership records and voting rights

Several countries' regulators have issued permissive regulations surrounding STOs, with Korea and Thailand leading the way recently.
