Abstract
This IDC Market Perspective summarizes high-level takeaways from MWC 2023, including how the traditional telecom ecosystem is rapidly evolving both internally using innovative technologies (e.g., cloud-native) and externally through broader involvement from nontraditional players (e.g., hyperscale cloud providers). Along with hosting an IDC client event, the telecom team met with over 40+ stakeholders during the week, including vendors, comms SPs, systems integrators, cloud SPs, and end customers.
"The telecom industry continues to position 5G networking as an instrumental tool for carriers, consumers, and enterprise customers," says Patrick Filkins, research manager, IoT and Telecom Network Infrastructure at IDC. "Further, the 5G road map is reaching a critical juncture whereby reliance on a diverse set of new technologies, including cloud-native infrastructure and 5G service exposure, as well as the potential reliance on hyperscale partners, presents a new set of challenges that need to be addressed before vendors and carriers are able to optimally address customer needs."
