Abstract

This IDC Market Note discusses GitHub's announcement of the general availability of Copilot for Business.

"The release of GitHub Copilot for Business underscores Microsoft and GitHub's first-mover advantage in the space of generative AI-based developer tools. With an improved AI model and a bevy of enhancements geared toward enterprise customers such as simplified license management, organizationwide policy management controls, and enhanced privacy and support for corporate proxies, Copilot for Business has the potential to become one of the most widely adopted intelligent coding developer tools in the enterprise," noted Arnal Dayaratna, research vice president, Software Development at IDC. "GitHub has the potential to improve Copilot for Business further by personalizing code suggestions to the stylistic idiosyncrasies of code produced within the organization in which it is deployed. GitHub Copilot for Business has already made progress with respect to the personalization of code suggestions by demonstrating the ability to understand the style of the code that contextually surrounds it, as told to IDC by GitHub. That said, given a blank code editing page, GitHub Copilot will default to the most common style found in public code. Regardless, GitHub stands strongly positioned to leverage data acquired from its initial traction in the enterprise to continue improving the product further and serving the specific needs of enterprise customers. Currently, GitHub Copilot is used by thousands of organizations."
