Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight explores the importance of solid state drives (SSDs) built with quad-level cell (QLC) NAND flash to potentially reduce costs in enterprise storage environments. QLC flash that stores four bits per cell offers a denser alternative to SSDs built with triple-level cell (TLC) flash now that vendors have worked to overcome the main downsides, including lower endurance, to make the QLC technology ready for use with many workloads on enterprise storage systems. This document contains results from IDC's Infrastructure for Storage and Data Management Survey completed in January 2023. IDC surveyed 600 IT and line-of-business managers who are familiar with their organizations' storage systems. Most ranked QLC flash SSDs as a highly important technology to reduce costs in their storage environments.
