Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight uncovers an interesting relationship between the use of DevOps tools and practices. IDC surveyed 311 IT professionals who influence or implement DevOps products and practices in their organizations and asked them about their use of open source software (OSS) related to development activities. Just over half of the 311 respondents are currently using or piloting OSS for the purpose of development. Of the 167 respondents who are using or piloting OSS in their development activities, 60% of these survey participants are also using or are piloting the use of internally curated OSS repositories for development purposes.

"This survey uncovered an interesting relationship between the use of DevOps tools and practices, and the use of an internally curated OSS repository for development purposes at these organizations. It does not surprise me that DevOps-competent organizations are more comfortable curating their own OSS repositories," said Al Gillen, GVP, Software Development and Open Source, IDC. "If you are comfortable using DevOps tooling and practices to manage your own software development, your organization is inherently better prepared to take advantage of community OSS for your own development purposes, since, among other things, you already know how to manage a software supply chain."
