Abstract

This IDC study presents our forecast for U.S. 5G smartphone shipments by operating system and air interface. The U.S. 5G smartphone market will reach 115.5 million units shipped in 2022, up 24.5% from the 92.8 million units shipped in 2021. From there, shipments will reach 157.9 million units in 2026, the final year of our forecast period, resulting in a CAGR of 11.2%.

"The growing popularity of premium flagship devices in the United States has kept ASPs flat from last year while increasing volume share of mmWave-powered smartphones," said Anthony Scarsella, research manager with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. "With refresh rates reaching nearly 42 months in the U.S. market, consumers are opting for premium devices that can last three to four years compared with mid or entry-level devices. Premium models from Android and iOS in 2022 have pushed growth in both 5G and ASP thanks to the release of the iPhone 14, Samsung Foldables, and the latest Pixel from Google."
