Abstract

This IDC Perspective outlines the current state of regulations, initiatives, and challenges related to 5G networks. As the federal government continues to invest billions into 5G technology, agencies should be aware of challenges they may face related to cybersecurity and infrastructure modernization, as well as mandates, executive orders, regulations, and legislation.

"5G technology is revolutionizing mobile networks by providing increased connectivity, boosting speeds, and broadening functionality for internet-enabled devices. Increased connectivity can help operationalize IoT, facilitate remote workforces, and enable continuous observability," said Aaron Walker, research manager for IDC's Worldwide Government Trust and Resiliency Strategies practice. "While these functions will benefit industry and government alike, they still pose new challenges in terms of security research and infrastructure modernization that must be addressed quickly."
