Abstract

This IDC Perspective discusses virtual client computing patterns. Events over the past two years drove a rapid diversification in the patterns of business challenges, use cases, technical labor force, and employee labor force, which in turn drove changes in the requirements for implementing client virtualization. These patterns are often lumped under the generic desktop-as-a-service label, but careful examination reveals several dynamic patterns that, if properly assessed, can lead to more effective programs.

"Virtualization is a key tool in helping technology departments meet the talent strategies and operational needs of their enterprises," said Shannon Kalvar, research director, IT Service Management and Client Virtualization at IDC. "By identifying the new dynamic patterns of technical requirements and diverse resource needs, we can more easily cut through the thicket of related technologies to find the exact match for our specific needs."
