Abstract
This IDC Perspective delves into the role of tools, talent, and teamwork in network and networking staff success. IT organizations are under tremendous pressure to deliver on the promise of the digital business model. And at the center of the digital infrastructure serving this business model is the network — and all those IT staff involved in designing, deploying, defending, operating, and optimizing the network. Just as the use of the network is adapting to suit shifting digital business requirements, management of the network is shifting to a more proactive and collaborative approach. This is requiring the advancement of networking staff roles and responsibilities, as well as the development of greater contributions by both lines of business and other IT domains such as security, cloud, and development. For IT executives, while the challenges associated with putting in place the right talent, culture, practices, and toolsets are significant, the rewards for doing it right run high and wide. Service levels, security posture, staff productivity, IT credibility, and digital innovations stand to see improvement as the network is better used and managed.
"There is no doubt, IT organizations must let go of the old if they are to properly serve the new. For the networking staff, whether focused on engineering or operations, serving new digital business demands requires a reformation of roles as well as a reinforcement of tools. Doing less deploying allows for doing more in design. Doing less operating allows for doing more in innovation. Combining advanced network management skills and systems provides much-needed relief for tactical duties while heightening staff effectiveness and impact in serving strategic requirements. Without relief from the old, the new will suffer," says Mark Leary, research director, Network Observability and Automation.
