Abstract

This IDC Market Presentation was given to various organizations during September to November 2022.

Monetizing 5G standalone (5G SA) assets as a core business driver is pushing some communications service providers (SPs) to shift to more agile and autonomous business strategies that address opportunities tied to software-defined networking (SDN), enterprise desire to purchase network connectivity as a service (NaaS), and enterprise partnerships driving advanced business solution offerings such as those incorporating multi-access edge computing (MEC) architecture. 5G's multidimensional and multipartner relationship options extend service packages beyond connectivity to create differentiating customer value. They also bring increased complexity to network operations and to the monetization functions in very nontraditional ways of doing business.

IDC believes over the next 12–24 months installed operations and monetization systems, even from just five years ago, will continue to weigh down communications SP new business opportunities from the lack of real-time responsiveness and support for partner-provided service components. For the network operators embracing change, the wheels of new business opportunity are now turning. Meeting the orchestration, inventory, catalog, activation, assurance, charging, billing, and partner management needs invoked by new 5G SA network slicing and 5G SA MEC–based services will not easy. Investing in new systems reflects a point for adopting new functionality as a strategic aspect of doing business rather than as an endpoint along the path of new technology expansion.
