Abstract

This IDC Perspective provides insights into quantum computing and high-performance computing (HPC) integration. The need to compress time to insights from massive and complex data sets is fueling the demand for quantum computing integration into high-performance computing environments. These integrations would allow enterprises to accelerate and optimize current HPC applications and processes by simulating and emulating them on today's noisy intermediate scale computers.

"Ultimately, quantum computing will be used to solve intractable problems outside the capabilities of current classical compute technologies. However, the technology still nascent, with quantum hardware vendors challenged in their ability to scale qubits and reduce error to the point that this is possible. In the short term, quantum hardware and software solutions provide enterprises a means for becoming quantum ready, as well as use the technology to accelerate current HPC processes." — Heather West, PhD, senior research analyst, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms, and Technologies Group at IDC
