Abstract

This IDC Market Analysis Perspective (MAP) highlights worldwide storage systems for 2022. While enterprise storage overall is a relatively mature market, there are segments that are still growing at a rapid rate. This MAP presentation highlights those segments and discusses the market trends impacting both the slower growing and the faster growing enterprise storage segments.

Unstructured data storage is undergoing significant change as vendors of both file- and object-based storage platforms add new access methods. A good number of scale-out file systems now support object-based access methods like S3 and Swift, while a good number of object-based storage systems support file-based access methods like NFS and SMB.

Enterprise storage vendors should continue to focus on improving infrastructure agility and ease of use even as they work toward more efficient storage infrastructure to better meet sustainability goals. Many enterprises are seeking to consolidate more workloads onto fewer on-premises storage platforms while move appropriate workloads to the cloud. Spending on cloud-based infrastructure outpaces both growth rate and spend for on-premises infrastructure and that will continue to be true throughout the forecast period, making hybrid multicloud integration an important capability for most enterprise storage systems.
