Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight focusses on the critical role of talent in digital technology adoption by operations (IDC describes "operations" as including any activity or physical process which is integral to executing an organization's core business, including producing goods or services, moving goods or services, and maintaining assets, infrastructure, or facilities.) and how talent challenges are impacting organizations across a broad cross-section of industries around the world. It is a snapshot from IDC's Worldwide Future of Operations Survey, 2022.

The pace of digital technology innovation, competition for talent, and economywide labor shortages have all come together to make it more difficult than ever to acquire, retain, and keep up-to-date digital technology talent. Almost half of survey respondents indicated that lack of digital technology talent is constraining their organizations' ability to keep pace with technology. It's not about cost; it's about attracting new talent and keeping existing talent up to date on new technologies.

Cloud opens the door to doing more with less. A growing number of organizations are beginning to recognize the opportunity and accelerate their investments in cloud (see Future of Operations Worldwide Survey, 2022: Update on Technology Investment Priorities in Operations, IDC #US49590421, August 2022). In addition, the survey showed that digital technology leaders were more aggressive adopters of cloud.
