Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight highlights vital results from IDC's 2022 Consumer Smartphone Survey, focusing on current trade-in trends in the U.S. consumer smartphone market. The survey was fielded in June of 2022 and included 2,118 respondents from consumers across the United States. In addition, this document examines the utilization of trade-in programs among consumers and which channels they prefer to employ.

"Trade-in remains a critical aspect of purchasing a new device in the U.S. smartphone market," said Anthony Scarsella, research director for IDC's Mobile Phone program. "Nearly half of U.S. consumers either trade in or sell their old device when it is time to purchase a new smartphone. Overall, 31% utilize trade-in programs, while 25% still store their old device as a backup."
