Abstract

This IDC Market Perspective analyzes the current and future intersection and impact of computer vision (CV) technologies and the automotive ecosystem. In particular, this document provides background on key challenges faced by the automotive ecosystem, highlights the evolution and emergence of CV more broadly, and identifies and assesses the maturity and market readiness of current and future CV-enabled use cases for automotive. In summary, IDC sees CV having an outsized, material impact well beyond assisted (i.e., ADAS) and automated/autonomous vehicles (AVs).

"One of the challenges of understanding the opportunity for CV in automotive is being able to think beyond its critical role in enabling autonomous vehicles," said Matt Arcaro, research director of IDC's Computer Vision AI Tools and Technology Research Program. "In reality, there is a broad range of CV-enabled or capable use cases that can help the automotive industry materially improve costs, efficiency, and visibility."
