Kubernetes and Serverless State of the Market: Counterparts in Cloud-Native Development
This IDC Market Presentation focuses on U.S. organization adoption of Kubernetes and serverless, including their overlap. This document also provides IDC insights on current adoption rates, pain points, and related product functionality and adjacencies impacting these areas of the PaaS market along with recommendations for IT and technology leaders and for PaaS vendor leaders.
Kubernetes container orchestration and serverless are key technologies that underly and largely define cloud-native development, along with containers, microservices, and APIs. The pain of dealing with infrastructure and servers, even in the cloud, dampens the adoption and speed of release cycles for cloud-native development. While access to compute and storage infrastructure is made much easier with the cloud, it still must be provisioned, managed, and configured for each workload and application that runs on it. Both containers and serverless are technologies that seek to address some combination of these pain points for enterprise and digital-native software development groups. Kubernetes orchestration is a way to manage containers and thus further abstract and address the pain points of using infrastructure as a service.
