Abstract

This IDC Survey summarizes findings from the 3Q22 U.S. Gamer Survey as it relates to likely video game console hardware sales in the United States in 4Q22. The demographics of likely console buyers are considered, as are a range of gaming-related buying factors and purchasing rationales for the Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED, PlayStation 5 Standard Edition, and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition consoles.

The presentation also assesses console gamers' satisfaction with the console they primarily use and how disc/card, digital game and add-on, free-to-play, and bundled game subscription service dynamics have changed relative to 3Q21. Inflation- and recession-related concerns are gauged in late 2022 based on changes to these same year-on-year software buying/usage dynamics.

"Improved supply should help push up hardware shipments in the United States in 4Q22 relative to 4Q21, but for the full year, our research suggests total console shipments will be down versus 2021. We're also seeing some inflationary and recessionary concerns undermining game software spending, although the rise of bundled game subscription services is simultaneously impacting how console gamers choose to spend on software." — Lewis Ward, IDC's research director of Gaming and VR/AR
