This IDC Survey examines data from IDC's 2021 Outsourced Cybersecurity Services (MSS, MDR, DDoS) Survey, providing insight into managed security services (MSS) and managed detection and response (MDR) trends including deployment types, pricing models, buyer drivers, budget intention, and evaluation attributes.

This IDC Survey also provides analysis of IT buyers' concerns, practices, and preferences in the practice area of MSS/MDR.

Key findings include the following:

  • SaaS security managed by a security services provider through the cloud is the primary MSS deployment type. Yet on-premises management is still the primary MSS deployment for XDR, SIEM, FW, and PAM solutions.
  • For a typical MSS engagement, worldwide organizations spend $68 per month per device and per user. U.S. organizations spend 20% more compared with the worldwide average, the highest across all countries.
  • Organizations expect the MDR provider to take more actions after business hours but prefer to have "a joint decision" during business hours.
  • The most important vendor evaluation attributes vary greatly across countries, while "excellent SOC presence and management" emerged as the top-ranked attribute.
  • The trend of outsourcing more IT security infrastructure is increasing in three years' time.
  • The intention to increase MDR and MSS budget is similar in year 2022.

"These growing trends revealed from tech buyer perspectives are consistent with the healthy growth projections we are forecasting for the worldwide MSS and MDR market," said Cathy Huang, research director for IDC's Worldwide Security Services. "Nonetheless, the security budget cannot grow in an unsustainable way. The need for security investment rationalization and operational cost savings are growingly expected from tech buyers when engaging an external MSS service provider," Huang continues.
