Abstract

This IDC Perspective is part of a series of IDC studies that examines enterprise IT project and portfolio management (PPM) and agile and collaborative work management (CWM) solutions. It provides both vendor analysis and customer reference context for technology adoption and buyer decision making.

This document also assesses the strategy of Micro Focus, a vendor targeting strategic PPM, value stream management, enterprise IT PPM and DevOps in the cloud with analytics, and ML capabilities. We discuss Micro Focus' IT PPM, strategic PPM, and DevOps product portfolio. The company's depth and focused product capability position it to help meet pressing user needs. We position Micro Focus relative to trends in user adoption demand for combined agile PPM and scaled execution. We do so in the context of an overall economy that is volatile in unprecedented ways with global hybrid work emerging from the pandemic and geopolitical and economic volatility. We see this driving high demand and adoption for collaborative work and strategic PPM and DevOps as software increasingly drives digital transformation at drastic speeds. Automation is vital as we must address ongoing needs to manage dynamic innovation, unpredictability, and hybrid distributed work moving into 2023–2024 time frame. We also include a summary of a Micro Focus customer reference, a global banking and financial services company with over 80,000 employees seeking to establish an effective and strategic portfolio management, governance, standardization, and workflow.

"IDC sees adoption of strategic portfolio management solutions for dynamic execution and innovative decision making via automation to help enable speedy responsiveness to dynamically changing environments and initiatives," said Melinda Ballou, research director, IDC's Agile ALM, Quality, and Portfolio Strategies service. "Complementing these capabilities, increasingly, we observe demand for collaboration and adaptive PPM, along with enterprise depth for project and portfolio management approaches for businesses and technology, helping focus teams with targeted execution globally, cutting delays to benefit, and improving metrics. It is in part due to these trends that IDC has chosen to prioritize this area as one of several areas of focus for a series of end user–oriented updated vendor analysis that includes customer summaries."
