Abstract

This IDC Perspective address five areas in which CIOs and IT organizations can enhance and extend their influence in the companies they serve. COVID-19 has raised IT's prominence within the organization because of the need to modify business processes, enhance firewall and security considerations, provide home-based technical support, and implement companywide videoconferencing. With a careful and strategic approach to their influence, CIOs, senior IT management teams, and IT itself can maintain and enhance their organizational influence — whether or not their companies continue to work from home, and most especially, during the "next normal," when companies will rely on IT to support and propel their digital strategies.

Eric Bloom, adjunct research advisor, IDC's IT Executive Programs, believes that "CIO and overall IT organizational influence are based on many factors, including flawless technology execution, internal company values, and IT leadership's characteristics and professional brand. The post-COVID era provides an opportunity for CIOs and IT organizations to continue to shine."
