IDC PlanScape: Robotics as a Service for Value Creation Beyond Regular Operational Asset Management
Abstract
This IDC study proposes to redefine and illustrate how the robotics-as-a-service model can empower companies across asset-intensive industries such as manufacturing, supply chain, healthcare, energy, and utilities to increase their operational and business returns from robotics or similar intelligent operational systems. Thus, as part of the development or improvement of the physical segment of a broad enterprise digital transformation (DX), this document details the unique benefits RaaS confers to organizations and their business ecosystem. In particular, it paves the way for a new vision over the connected asset strategic prioritization exercise.
"Robotics and comparable intelligent operational systems are too often understood and presented as a variation of regular digitized operational assets. Consequently, they are mostly seen through the lens of their costs as well as operability. It explains why, much like for standard connected operational assets, users tend to put much emphasis on the equipment's core operational performance. That said, applying the robotics-as-a-service model in its entirety means shifting the focus from the robots, instead take advantage of parallel digital capabilities such as analytics and then refocus on the operational value output that is visible at the end-customer level," states Remy Glaisner, research director, IDC's Commercial Service Robots service.
