Abstract

This IDC Market Note discusses how the Philippines has transitioned from a 4G/fixed wireless access (FWA) and xDSL market to a 4G/5G FWA and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) market in just under two years with aggressive FTTH rollouts on the part of Globe Telecom and PLDT–Smart and the greenfield buildout by DITO Telecommunity. The fiberization of the Philippines necessarily encompasses access, aggregation, national backhaul/backbone, datacenter interconnect capacity, and international submarine capacity. With 5G deployments starting in 2020, the Philippines is in a much better position to benefit from 5G, digital services, and the future metaverse, which is an exciting prognosis that prior to 2018 would not have seemed realistic.
