The Path Forward for IT/OT Convergence in Asia/Pacific (Excluding Japan) Energy Companies: Insights from IDC's 2020 IT/OT Convergence Survey

On-line Presentation

Abstract

This IDC Tech Buyer Presentation provides an understanding of the priorities for IT/operational technology (OT) convergence and the challenges of energy companies (mining, utilities, and oil and gas [O&G]) in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) (APEJ). Many energy companies realise that to advance in technology, they have to deal with incompatible legacy systems, encounter security threats, and experience gaps, which are major barriers toward an integrated IT/OT system.

However, IT/OT convergence is gaining momentum because companies start to realise that an upgrade in their existing operational systems implies that sensors and devices are necessary while the maturity of employees needs to improve to create an integrated approach. IT/OT convergence is an evolving process in its early stages of development and has a long way to go before a full real-time IT/OT can be experienced.

The need for collaborated tools and expertise, which can drive more efficient operations, is starting to be released by companies. Collaboration technology maximises the transfer of knowledge to younger employees and, at the same time, reduces cybersecurity threats to avoid disruption to operations and financial losses.

"Although the motivation to invest in OT is there, technology adoption still lacks impact because of the level of understanding about the technology application. The way forward is through partnerships between IT and OT at a meaningful operational and governance level for the business," says Emilie Ditton, associate VP, IDC Asia/Pacific Energy and Manufacturing Insights. "Driving operational efficiency by the integration of systems that achieves automation within processes is the objective. This will allow different functions to work together through reliable and resilient decision-making frameworks," she adds.
