13 Jul 2017
With more than 50,000 combined onsite attendance and via livestream in China’s key cities
BEIJING, CHINA, July 14th, 2017 – IDC China recently held its annual IDC Directions event in China from April to June 2017 at various China key cities Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen with the theme, “Tech Industry Redefined: The Rise of DX Economy”. The event brought together more than 500 attendees onsite from China ICT partners, vendors, CIOs, end-users and industry experts while almost 50,000 joined either the video or audio livestream – an event upgrade introduced for the first time this year. This overwhelming response is a clear testament to the market’s keen interest in the IDC Directions China event, where IDC shares the latest trends, challenges and insights into innovations in the country’s ICT industry.
“Despite standouts like Alibaba, Tencent, and Baidu leading the charge for innovation, majority of businesses in China still find themselves at the very beginning of their digital transformation journey” says Kitty Fok, Managing Director of IDC China. “The reception to IDC Directions this year is indicative of the country’s resolute appetite to develop key digital capabilities, in order to address changing customer demands and secure competitive advantage as China’s economy grows and evolves over the next 10 years.”
Fok adds, “Across the world, IDC Directions has been known for offering essential guidance on how technology trends and movements can be leveraged in order to create industry-leading organizations. With the response to IDC Directions in China coupled with key government initiatives and favorable economic conditions, China is well on its way to becoming a formidable player in the global digitalization race.”

This year, the IDC Directions China event tackled topics ranging from Opportunities in China's Digital Transformation (DX) Economy, IoT Strategy, Big Data, AR/VR, Cognitive @ AI, Cloud 2.0, and Factory of the Future.
Some key highlights from IDC Directions China 2017 include:
• The top two Cognitive/Artificial Intelligence use cases are anomaly detection and prevention; and digital assistant. For example, these applications can already be seen in the financial services industries. It is not surprising as financial related companies require such technologies to process the large amount of data being collected every second to innovate with new products/services and stay competitive.
• Factory Automation is a key example of the change we are seeing across the manufacturing industry. According to the IDC Manufacturing Insights Survey 2016, 38.3% of Chinese Manufacturers expect to increase investment on factory automation over the next 2 years.
• Future Tech Investments in Chinese Manufacturing in the next 2 years include: 23% will be using robotics; 26% will be using an IoT solution; 24% will be using additive manufacturing; 14% will be using cognitive systems; and 13% will be using AR/VR.
Zhenshan Zhong, Vice President of Enterprise Research and Emerging Technology at IDC China, concluded “ICT vendors need to seize the incremental opportunities in the era of digital transformation economy. Industry users are now leveraging new technologies to transform, innovate and grow for a true digital transformation. Your organization must become a digital native to meet the consumption demands of digital natives for digitalization, intelligence, personalization and speediness. Secondly, you need to employ the latest technology portfolio to redefine your business, ecosystem and business model and provide the best support for digital natives. Finally, you need to focus on incremental business opportunities brought about by new technologies, digital transformation and government policies. These business opportunities will be 3 times more than what you now get in the business market.”
