Abstract
This IDC study examines the market share of virtual machine software vendors in 2022 as well as the market forces that influenced their performances. Virtual machine software is a submarket of the software-defined compute (SDC) software functional market. Virtual machine software includes hypervisor revenue derived from traditional, noncloud server virtualization deployments and does not include hypervisor revenue that is bundled with cloud system software for cloud deployments.
According to Gary Chen, research director at IDC's Software-Defined Compute, "Hypervisors are a foundational datacenter technology that is the compute standard today. However, the virtualization market is evolving beyond standalone virtualization software to modern cloud and container platforms."
